Nutritional Therapy applies nutrition science to promote health, peak performance, and individualised care. Nutritional Therapists assess and identify imbalances that may contribute to symptoms and provide personalised dietary and lifestyle recommendations.
Nutritional Therapy is a complementary approach that works alongside mainstream healthcare to support individuals in optimising their well-being and addressing chronic health concerns.
Nutritional Therapists have degree-level training in Nutritional Therapy or Personalised Nutrition, often incorporating Functional Medicine principles. They provide tailored nutrition and lifestyle recommendations based on thorough health assessments and are typically registered with a professional body like the ANP or NTOI.
Nutritionists generally hold a degree in Human Nutrition or a related field and work in various sectors, including public health, food industries, and research. While the title "Nutritionist" is not legally protected in Ireland, professionals can seek voluntary registration with organisations such as the Association for Nutrition (AfN) or the Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute (INDI) to demonstrate their qualifications and adherence to professional standards.
Dietitians work within the healthcare system (e.g., hospitals, clinics) and are regulated by CORU. They provide nutritional care for conditions like diabetes, obesity, and child growth concerns, often through GP referrals.
What is Functional Medicine?
Functional Medicine is a science-based, individualised approach that looks at the root causes of health concerns rather than just symptoms. It considers the interactions between genetics, lifestyle, and environment to create a comprehensive health strategy. Functional testing may be used to assess factors such as gut bacteria balance, digestive function, and hormone health.
No, lab testing is optional. However, it can provide valuable insights, especially for complex or long-standing health concerns. Without testing, progress may take longer as we rely on a trial-and-error approach. Functional tests are not typically covered by public healthcare systems.
This is entirely your choice. Nutritional Therapy works alongside conventional healthcare, and a responsible practitioner will always flag any concerning symptoms that require medical attention. While Nutritional Therapists do not diagnose or make medical claims, they can collaborate with your GP as needed.
